Column for a cause – International Women's Day
Hi everyone,
It’s the start of a new month and we hope you’ve been having an amazing time at school! On 8th March, the world observes International Women’s Day. The Cambridge English Dictionary defines feminism as “the belief that women should be allowed the same rights, power, and opportunities as men and be treated in the same way, or the set of activities intended to achieve this state”. And yet, so often we hear “feminist” used as an insult, the sordid state of women in societies around the world, and the suppression of women’s voices even now.
We asked some of our classmates what feminism meant to them. “Equality of opportunity”, “freedom of choice”, and “equal rights”, all followed by “regardless of gender”. “Equality” and “regardless of gender” - those are what are most important.
In our day and age, taking steps - whether personally or communally - to improve the status of women’s rights and their treatment is of utmost importance. Whether that means making an active effort to rid yourself and your society of prejudices, using more inclusive language, or making yourself aware of how you can propagate gender equality, take some time on this day to become a feminist.
This International Women’s Day, appreciate the women in your life and the sacrifices they have taken. And this International Women’s day, take a step towards a future with a promise of equality.
Best Regards,
