MUN - International Day of UN Peacekeepers
On the year of 2010, TISB had a MUN committee during the VIVUM event. This created the possibility for TISBMUN to emerge and being created. It is a group that never looked back. On 29 May, the annual UN ‘International Day of UN Peacekeepers’ happened, and this year focused on the power of partnerships. To get a better understanding about this, we reached out to TISB’s MUN Prefects, Rohan and Aditya from Grade 11, and Mr Anand who has monitored the group for years, to learn more about the TISBMUN and their plans and thoughts for the future.
MUN fundamentally is not just about debate and writing, MUN is about perspectives – Aditya, Grade 11, MUN Prefect
Reading about affairs, incidents and news about what is happening all around the world, builds awareness and knowledge of what is going on and what may take place in the future. Students benefit from the habit and it creates visions and helps them realise that any problem, however big it might be, has different perspectives and affects everyone in different ways. “MUN fundamentally is not just about debate and writing, MUN is about perspectives”, says Aditya, who sees MUN as a possibility to learn more about how to be open to new and other ideas. It also provides a way to learn how to work with a diverse group of people, and with issues that go beyond a single person.
Although MUN around the world recently has had years of limitations, TISBMUN participators have done their best, even online. This year the TISBMUN Prefects are moving back to what made MUN so very special in the first place – physical debates. “This year we plan to not just teach students how to be analytical and how to debate, but we plan to equip students with the skills they need to tackle any issue, whether it be global or local”, says Aditya, who alongside his partner Prefect, Rohan, are looking forward to physical events.
The MUN Prefects are incredibly excited to start the 12th edition of their TISBMUN conference. “This year, TISBMUN will take place on the 7th, 8th and 9th of October and will feature a dynamic and engaging array of committees”, says Rohan, who alongside his team invites everyone, not just experienced MUNers, with an incredible opportunity to debate with some of the best in the city. “TISBMUN is one of the city's oldest and most prestigious MUNs and we greatly look forward to taking that legacy forward this year”, says Rohan, and encourages students to join the MUN Club which takes place every Tuesday from 3:30 to 4:30pm in Room 314.
Mr Anand encourages students to attend every school MUN during the vacation, as it develops experiences. There are different committees which cater individual subject interest, for example Biology (WHO), Economics (ECOSOC), UNHRC or UNHRC (Social Studies), DISEC (Politics), Historical Committees (History), as well as English which is constantly used. “Remember that to learn to swim, you have to enter the swimming pool.”
