Inter-House MUN
In 2020 TISBMUN celebrated its 10-year anniversary. It has been a busy year for the team behind the school’s MUN, as TISB has hosted and participated in many MUN activities and events throughout the academic year. Although they have been online, the events have been popular and well attneded with great enthusiasm. This year the TISBMUN team has hosted its first ever TISBMUN Jr Conference which became the largest junior online MUN conference in India. Despite all the successes through the academic year the team did not stop there. In February they launched the Intra-MUN, an inter-House competition for students to practice their knowledge and skills for upcoming years, while at the same time earning Points for their Houses.
We believe that IntraMUN plays a key role in training TISB delegates for our larger TISBMUN conference and other conferences – Aayush, Grade 11
The TISB MUN team is well practised in hosting MUN Conferences, so adapting them to online did not pose too much of a challenge. “The MUN committees were held via MS Teams calls, where students logged with their country names and raised their virtual hands when they wanted to speak”, says Aayush and explains that the participating delegates were all immersed in the MUN experience, even though the conference was taking place online.
In IntraMUN there were two committees: the Junior committee for students of Grades 6 - 8, and the Senior committee for Grades 9 - 12. Each student who registered for the event was allotted a country to represent in their respective committees. Students represented their country’s viewpoint with regards to the agenda and deliberate with other nations to bring about a fruitful solution to the agenda. “In the Junior Committee, the delegates discussed the critical issue of ‘Religious Radical Terrorism’ in the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee. In the Senior Committee, an Historic Security Council, the delegates discussed the ‘Nigerian Civil War of 1967’”, explains Aayush.
After the first session of the Conferences, the organisers received news that after school activities would be on hold due to changes in on and off campus hybrid lessons. “This was a little hitch in our plan, since MUN is normally a continuous process, taking place over 2 - 3 days”, says Aayush, whose team had already staggered the sessions a week apart. “However, when we re-joined two weeks after the first session, we were happy to see that most delegates had used the time off to conduct deeper research into their agendas and become better prepared”, explains Aayush who initially was worried that the two weeks pause in sessions would result in delegates losing interest or rhythm.
Due to the success of the IntraMUN, the organisers have gained an understanding of how future MUN Conferences should be organised. “We understood how to give allocations, set agendas, make background guides and most importantly, how to communicate with delegates even when faced with challenges”, explains Aayush, hoping to use these learnings when organising TISBMUN in December this year. The team plan to hold IntraMUN every year to develop in-house MUN talents. “Hopefully IntraMUN will be in person next year which would allow us to encourage more delegates to be involved in MUN”, concludes Aayush.
