In the PY Assembly on March 20, Environmental Prefect Darnita from Grade 5 and Jahaan from Grade 9 presented a plan to encourage students to get involved in raising clothes, notebooks, toys and trash for different organisations, and to reduce global warming for a better environment. This will happen through students donating the products that they would like to contribute with in boxes at the school. We reached out to Darnita and Jahaan to understand more about what they are doing and for what the purpose they are doing it.

Even just spreading the social cause message is a huge step in the right direction! – Darnita, Grade 5

Being an engaged person, younger or older, who spreads a message for social or environmental benefits is an important contributor to a better world. “I believe that every person can contribute a little bit to the environment, and it will surely make a big difference”, says Darnita, encouraging others to pledge and provide just a little bit for Earth. Darnita and Jahaan have so far created their project with the following partners for each item of donation:

  1. Clothes – ‘Imagine Trust’ is the partner who sets up pop-up stores on weekends to sell the clothes collected.
  2. Notebooks – New notebooks are handmade using unused paper and distributed to domestic children in the community and local orphanage called ‘Thayimane’.
  3. Toys – Donations are made to three local orphanages: ‘Thayimane’, ‘Santosh Charity’ and ‘Swanthanam’.
  4. Trash – All collected trash is picked up by ‘Trash 2 Cash’, a trash management partner. The money received is used for funding and supporting other Social Cred$ led community programmes, such as ‘PIQtureme’ (photo memories for orphans) and ‘Help a Senior’.

In the future the team plans to hold various sessions for each grade or section, which gives them a demonstration of how to segregate trash correctly. “This will help them do the same in their homes and communities”, says Jahaan, and explains how money gotten from the trash project can be used for the well-being of communities and domestic workers.

Darnita and Jahaan both believe that the presentation they had during the Assembly was a good start to encourage students’ awareness of what can be done. After the Assembly, they hope that more students will come forward and take part in donating contributions. “These contributions make wonderful gifts which paint the underprivileged children’s faces with happiness and smiles!”
