Teacher Portrait – Ms Ariana
Born and raised in a small town near Delhi, Ms Ariana grew up and spent her childhood and student years there. Growing up in a place which did not accept her feelings and identity, learning Mathematics became the only and most enjoyable aspect in her student life. Ms Ariana’s passion for the topic, encouraged her to pursue B.Sc. (Honours) as well as M.Sc. in Mathematics. Focused on Mathematics and the importance of highlighting LGBTQ+ rights, we reached out to Ms Ariana to learn more about her background, passion for Mathematics and ideas for a better world for everyone.
Amongst all the topics in Maths, I love to teach Calculus the most – Ms Ariana, Mathematics Department
After graduating, to attend a Grad School Ms Ariana relocated to Ahmedabad because it has a culture that made her feel good and this inspired her to remain there as an IGCSE and A levels Mathematics teacher for a year. “Soon I recognised that the wonderful adventure had to come to an end in order to pursue a better profession in a more queer-friendly city and so I moved to Bangalore”, says Ms Ariana.
After working some time in Bangalore, Ms Ariana finally found TISB “It's been four wonderful years at TISB, and I couldn't imagine enjoying teaching anywhere else as much as I have here”, says Ms Ariana. She sees that one of the best aspects of the school is the colleagues, who are empathic, kind and helpful. In addition, she is very thankful for the character and quality of the students, who make her teaching enjoyable, as well as learning more every day while teaching them.
Ms Ariana believes that education generally has great potential and could contribute to making the world a better place. “To some extent I am able to do so, especially for the LGBTQ+ community at TISB through the Spectrum Club”, says Ms Ariana, who weekly spends after-school time to supervise students who are exploring how to make the school safer and more inclusive for the LGBTQ+ students and their allies. “Indian schools are often synonymous with queerphobia. That's something I'd like to alter”, says Ms Ariana, who would like to protect and support students who might face harassment. Many students who are physically and mentally maltreated could suffer from depression and anxiety, which affects their productivity. “Therefore, it is crucial to raise awareness and so the Spectrum Club has conducted webinars on LGBTQ+ allyship and inclusiveness, as well as mental health”, explains Ms Ariana, whose student-led group created stunning awareness posters on May 17, during the United Nation’s ‘International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia’.
