Creative Maths - AMC 12 and AIME Qualification

In November last year, Avni from Grade 11 took part in the online American Mathematics Competition (AMC 12), a 25-question multiple choice examination for secondary school mathematics. The 75-minute exam contained problems which can be understood and solved with pre-calculus concepts. In January this year, the results were established, and Avni received 111 points out of 150. We reached out to Avni to find out more about the AMC 12 and what this means for the future.  

I would recommend that anyone who is interested in problem-solving should participate in an AMC contest at least once – Avni, Grade 11 

Avni took part in the AMC 12 because the AMC is known for creating questions that require creativity and ingenuity. “It's a great feeling when you realize you can use a formula you learned or when you spot a pattern and suddenly you know the solution for the problem”, says Avni, who managed to answer 19 out of the 25 questions before the examination finished.  

The score of 111 out of 150 has made Avni eligible to participate in the next round after the AMC 12, called the AIME. “My score was also high enough that I recieved distinction, which means I was in the top 1% of scorers”, explains Avni. “The award boosted my confidence and made me feel like all my hours of practicing and solving problems were being recognized.”  

Avni recommend anyone to participate in the AMC 12, as it allows one to build competences while enjoying the experience. “You learn a lot of math not covered in school syllabi while preparing, and you get exposure to a lot of fun and engaging problems.”
