TISB Grade 12 student Sanjana and three of her classmates, Inika, Risha and Krisha, started a website with a podcast and a blog, called 'She Said What?'. The podcast selects and discusses topics related to the modern landscape for women, aiming to raise awareness about various topics and phenomena in today's global context – with a special focus on women. Recently the podcast did an interview with TISB Principal Dr. Caroline on her journey through professional sports and education.
As a group of close friends, we have always engaged in conversations about socially pertinent topics. Engaging in these discussions made us realise that media often portrays womanhood as a black or white experience, leaving out the myriad shades of grey in the middle – Sanjana, Grade 12
The initiative ‘She Said What?’, started by the four TISB Grade 12 students Sanjana, Inika, Risha and Krisha, comprises of two parts: a podcast and a blog. Each episode of the podcast explores different facets of life as a woman in modern society. The blog later builds on to the podcast episodes, and delves further and deeper into a varied set of topics – ranging from business and politics to sports and social media. The realisation that womanhood in media is often portrayed simplified and stereotypical way fuelled a desire among the group of friends to reach out “to share our personal thoughts with a wider audience, in the form of informative yet unfiltered conversation, leading to the creation of our podcast She Said What?”, explains Sanjana.
Sanjana goes on and says, “one day, during quarantine, we were discussing different world leaders' responses to the pandemic. After a long and passionate conversation, we were feeling particularly inspired to share our thoughts with the world; and thus came the first episode of 'She Said What?' As the team of founders went on their journey and the podcast progressed, they felt a need to address multiple facets of the issues that we were covered in the episodes. The need for a more in-depth discussion led to the idea of the website ‘She Said What?’ – as an extension of the podcast where content writers upload blogs about the modern landscape as women. The target audience mainly consists of teenagers and young adults, who are interested in topics related to what it means to be a woman today’s modern society.
The episodes that are released on a fortnightly basis on Spotify, Youtube and Instagram, are produced by the four friends, and features prominent guests that the team comes across and contacts on social media. Sanjana elaborates: “For the most part, our episodes are snippets from conversations between just the four of us. However, we do bring guests onto our podcast who we feel can shed some more light on the topics to make the conversation more engaging. We have featured one of India's most prominent drag queens Mayamma – off-stage name Alex Mathew – and our very own Principal Dr. Caroline Pascoe, a former Olympic rower.”
The plan for the near future is to make 'She Said What?' completely self-sustainable by recruiting like-minded team members who are passionate about the project. “We hope to raise awareness amongst our audience about these social issues and hopefully contribute to a new generation of socially informed youth”, Sanjana continues to explain.
