TISB is now offering students courses and examination opportunities with the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Starting in January 2021, LAMDA examinations will be offered in various areas. Classes will take place inside the timetable or after school, depending on students' interest. We got in touch with our Head of Drama and LAMDA Coordinator, Ms Ruth, to hear more about the opportunities.

I am very excited to be offering this opportunity to the TISB community. I think that LAMDA will be a great edition to the creative community offering a range of exciting opportunities – Ms Ruth, Head of Drama and LAMDA Coordinator.

LAMDA is a renowned preforming arts school with their headquarters in London, UK. With previous students, such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Richard Armitage, as well as leading politicians, lawyers and businesspeople, LAMDA offers courses in communications and the dramatic arts, ranging from acting to public speaking. The courses and examinations available will help students develop and improve their confidence, communication, vocal modulation and fluency. In a modern world where offline and online meetings and presentations are commonplace, being able to deliver a topic and present oneself in a clear and confident way is key in any career path. “The London Academy of Art is an exciting opportunity to improve key skills in communication that can serve you in whatever path your life takes”, says Ms Ruth, who has previously successfully implemented two LAMDA departments at other schools.

The courses are available for all students, from Grade 1 through to IB students. The courses themselves are arranged in Grades 1 – 8, where Grades 6 – 8 classes can be used to support students’ college and university applications with UCAS points. The courses are open to anyone with an interest in drama, who would like to polish special techniques and prepare for auditions, or just want to develop public speaking skills. With a maximum of four students per group, and older students being likely to be fewer or on their own in their sessions, learning in the LAMDA courses can be very individual and fitted to the need of the student. “LAMDA lessons are also fun, exploring drama or public speaking in a more individual way with learning tailored to much smaller groups”, explains Ms Ruth.

LAMDA courses will start being offered from January until June 2021 and will be delivered in blocks of a minimum of 10 sessions, at a price of 2000 INR per term. The first examinations will be held in June 2021, and because of the current global pandemic and the ensuing distance learning, courses will initially take place online until physical school reopens. Ms Ruth will be managing the program, and classes will be conducted by a member of the Drama Department. As the LAMDA program is under development, only courses in drama-related areas will be offered. However, in the next academic year Musical Theatre will be made available for students.

As the quality of the LAMDA courses is so high, Ms Ruth is convinced that the students taking the classes will enjoy the learning, benefit in their development and be successful in their examinations. “Previous students have gone on to work in business, as presenters, as actors, for national youth theatre and on the radio. I am very excited to get started with the highly talented TISB community”, says Ms Ruth.

More information and how to sign up can be found in the recent email sent to all students and parents in Grades 6 – 12. Further details on LAMDA itself can be found on LAMDA's website.
