Theoretical Physics Enthusiasts - Look Here!
On 10 May, Yash from Grade 11 was notified that he had been selected as one of 40 international students accepted for the International Summer School for Young Physicists (ISSYP). Going through a competitive application process, with over a thousand applicants from all over the world, Yash was picked for this prestigious summer programme for young physicists. We got in touch with Yash to learn more about the ISSYP programme and why it will inspire other young Physics enthusiasts at TISB.
It is a rather intriguing proposition to be able to study scientific breakthroughs before they become scientific breakthroughs – Yash, Grade 11
Being a prestigious summer programme for aspiring Theoretical Physicists, the ISSYP brings together 40 of the most accomplished High School students for two weeks to promote international collaboration through learning. 20 seats are reserved for Canadian applicants, and 20 seats are open to international applicants. According to Yash, the application process is essentially a pre-college application, as it included everything from transcripts, recommendation letters, extra-curricular activities and essays.
The ISSYP is a programme organised by the Perimeter Institute, a non-governmental centre for scientific research, training, and educational outreach in foundational theoretical physics. “I was in a state of exhilaration, bordering exaltation, when I found my name on the class of 2021 list”, says Yash, who has been wanting to participate in the programme since he was 12 years old.
One of the reasons why Yash applied to the ISSYP programme was his passion for meeting and collaborating with other physics enthusiasts. “I wanted to participate in this programme because of the opportunity to interact with 40 of the most remarkable people with remarkable ability”, says Yash, who is the founder and leader of the TISB Physics Club where TISB students meet, discuss and collaborate together. “I would hope, and expect, that many of the physicists brought together this summer would, in the future, collaborate to produce invaluable research in the field of Theoretical Physics”, adds Yash who thinks the contacts and the outcomes of the programme will be more important for the world than his own future and his resume.
By participating in the ISSYP programme, Yash hopes to learn more about a variety of sub-disciplines of Theoretical Physics. “Much of my research over the last few years, has revolved around Gravitational Wave Physics”, says Yash, who is looking forward to the opportunity to diversify his knowledge by exploring the ground-breaking research of Physicists presented by the Perimeter Institute.

This year the TISB Physics Club launched the first ever All-India Physics Olympiad for High School students from all demographics. Next academic year, the TISB Physics Club will continue, and will be open to all TISB students who want to join and explore their enthusiasm for Physics.
