TISB Fairtrade Club
This term TISB welcomes a range of new student-led clubs to our after-school activities. One of these clubs is the Fairtrade Club, hosted and led by Mahika (President), Srijanee (Vice President), Meeli (Secretary), Jahnavi (Head of Social Media) and Aanya (Head of Research and Development) from Grade 11. The purpose of the club is to raise awareness about Fairtrade among students and to make TISB one of India’s first Fairtrade schools and joining the world-wide Fairtrade movement. We managed to reach Meeli and Mahika from the team to find out more about the club and its purpose.
We wish to provide a platform for value-based learning and holistic skills development to inspire positive change in our generation and make the students at TISB responsible global citizens – Mahika and Meeli, Grade 11
Living in a dynamic and contrasted world, Mahika and Meeli wants to encourage youth to become responsible consumers who understands and abide to fairer trade practices. “Considering that India is a nation comprising of over 90 million farmers, we felt that it was the need of the hour to encourage positive change and embark on a journey towards a sustainable future”, says Mahika and Meeli, who are planning to introduce and engage TISB with the Fairtrade India Schools Program.
The purpose of the after-school club and the Fairtrade India Schools Program are unanimous; to create conscious minds and spread ethical values related to consumer choices and the lives of producers across the globe. “This way the problems of mass global consumerism, climate change, poverty, food waste, and modern slavery can be addressed urgently”, says Mahika and Meeli.
As the Fairtrade club will shed light on and build ethical and environmentally conscious consumption, it is open for and welcomes all students at TISB between Grades 8 and 12. “We wish to educate and inspire students to inculcate Fairtrade practices thereby empowering those involved in our food and fashion supply chains.”
