Infinity Math Competition – TISB is ranking high!
The first round of the Infinity Mathematics competition took place on January 8. Three of TISB’s teams placed in the Top 50 of the competition and have therefore qualified for the final rounds scheduled for January 21 and 22. In addition, our teams have won 1st and 2nd places in the Math Challengers Zonal rounds and three of our students placed 1st and 2nd in Mathematician of the Zone rounds. We reached out to one of the students, Shravan from Grade 11, to learn more about the competition and what he feels about being rewarded with his awards.
I've been interested in Maths since forever! – Shravan, Grade 11
The Infinity Math Competition has been ongoing since 2014 and is designed and open for students from Grades 10-12. Some objectives of the competition include developing the capacity and thinking skills of students whose values goes beyond mathematics, to formulate questions and rounds that are effective ways of discovering and nurturing mathematical talent, and to help students combat false images of mathematics being a difficult or dull and tedious subject.
Shravan has been engaged in Maths for a very long time, and he always tries his best to make the most out of it. “When competitions like Infinity come around, I always try to take advantage of them, because competitions are a great way for anyone to flex their brain and apply the things that they've learned to solve fun challenging problems”, says Shravan.
He and the other competitors had to go through an individual round on Zoom, where they answered questions on their own. Then a team round happened, where teams came together to come up with solutions to more challenging problems. “I managed to snag runner-up in the individual round amongst the South Indian participants”, explains Shravan. “It does, of course, feel rewarding and motivating, but we've still got to focus and get ourselves together for the final round.”
To be part in the Infinity Math Competition, Shravan believes that interest is more important than knowledge and skills: “I would recommend that everyone who's interested in math participate in competitions like this, regardless of how "skilled". Competitions like these are great and unique ways of engaging with math, and you end up learning more from them than you'd think”, says Shravan, who is really thankful to his teammates, Avni and Ashna, for their contribution in the team round. “This was very much a team effort, and I'm incredibly grateful that they're on my team”.
