AMC Winners Qualified for the AIME
AMC is short for the ‘American Mathematics Competition’. The competition is like an exam, where participants are tasked with solving 25 multiple choice questions designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills in 75 minutes. TISB students Amogh and Juhan from Grade 11, both attended the competition and became part of the 5% out of all participants who are invited to the next step – the AIME. We reached out to Amogh and Juhan, to find out more about their interests in mathematics and their success in the AMC.
Obviously maths competitions are not for everyone. It takes a special interest in numbers and solving mathematical problems. "I have enjoyed doing maths questions and puzzles since my childhood and wanted to challenge myself", says Amogh who took part in the renowned AMC on the 4 and 10 February this year. “I’ve always thought that I was good in maths, but I didn’t have a way to test how good I was”, says Juhan whose curiosity made him attend the competition twice via Zoom together with organisers, invigilators and a few hundred other students.
Both Amogh and Juhan’s results are good, as they are part of the top 5% out of 350,000 students who participate every year. The shape and form of the competition is not a joke, as the Mathematical Association of America designs the exams being used, and the preparations have been rewarding. “Preparing for the AMC has boosted my maths skills and critical thinking, which can help me in the long run, when it comes to university and my career”, explains Amogh who thanks his parents and maths teacher Mrs Shruthi for supporting him. For the next round preparations will be even harder. “I will have to study even harder to qualify to the next round now. I will also be pursuing maths in a deeper and a broader spectrum in order to become better”, says Juhan about the upcoming AIME and his future.
